We’re back with our new single Beacons
Hey unkindness! Our latest single, Beacons, came out on July 21th, and it’s one of the most personal songs we’ve ever written.
Beacons is a hazy, lo-fi slow-burn — a raw reflection on heartbreak, grief, and learning to let go. It’s softer than our most recent work, more stripped back, but still full of emotion. You can hear the quiet strength in it, the kind that comes when words start to fall away and feeling takes over.
Behind the song
We recorded Beacons at The End Studios with Johan Meijer behind the desk, and produced the rest ourselves. It’s built around space and stillness — vintage textures, minimal arrangements, and Sebastian’s vocals right at the center. You might notice we’ve stepped away from the louder energy of Dearly Departed this time. That was intentional. This one needed room to breathe.
Inside the lyrics: A quiet reckoning
At the heart of Beacons is a kind of emotional aftermath, that disoriented place you land in when something important ends. The lyrics move through that fog, tracing grief, clarity, and the slow unraveling of love.
“The colors of the rainbow / Differ in my eyes” sets the tone. The beauty of it feels off, dulled. Nothing looks or feels the same anymore. The “pale and hollow beacons in the sky” are like false promises, lights that were meant to maybe guide, instead just fade away.
There’s tension between longing and resignation in lines like “Said ‘I know I won’t be held up / By lovers in the night / With ties to liquor and fire’“, a sort of moment of self-awareness of patterns we fall into and what we know won’t save us. As the song progresses, we shift between reflection and more of raw plea.
“Come get my pain / Come get my heartache / Take this spirit away” becomes a mantra, repeated like a call for release. It’s not just sorrow but a desire to let go of the weight, to be freed from it.
In the end, Beacons isn’t just about heartbreak. It’s about what two people carry, when ready to leave, what we leave behind, and the quiet strength it takes to ask for healing.
“The track builds a suspended atmosphere, where the silence between the chords speaks as much as the words themselves, and each atmospheric layer accentuates the weight of absence. It’s a sensory experience that privileges vulnerability, but without ever surrendering to fragility.”
